The course is an opportunity to explore and resolve contemporary territorial and socio-environmental challenges in a range of geographical contexts, including cities, mountain regions and countries in the global South. The programme has been designed with a particular emphasis on Territory, Sustainability and Geographical analysis.

  • Students must hold a Bachelor’s degree in geography from a Swiss university, or the Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Geosciences and Environment, Geography or Environmental Studies orientation.
  • Another degree or academic title may be judged equivalent and give access to the Master’s degree course, with or without further conditions.

University studies develop a wide range of cross-cutting skills, including conducting case studies, analysing and summarising, using software, communication, mapping, etc. This range of skills, combined with the specialist knowledge gained during the course, prepares students for professional roles in a diverse range of sectors, including :

  • Public services
  • private sector
  • design and engineering firms
  • NGOs
  • associations
  • Explore and resolve contemporary territorial and socio-environmental challenges in cities, mountain regions and countries in the global South.
  • Develop territorial analyses integrating planning, governance, socio-economic structures, and environmental/spatial systems at multiple levels.
  • Build analytical, critical, constructive and forward-looking perspectives on sustainability, development (global North/global South), human–environment relations and socio-environmental transitions.
  • Conduct geographical analysis through territorial diagnostics, representation, visualisation and modelling using quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Gain applied experience via specialist/themed modules, internship or academic mobility, and complete a dissertation demonstrating independent research.
  • Bachelor Students who want to work on territory, sustainability and geographical analysis across varied contexts
  • Profiles aiming to engage with planning/governance and socio-environmental transitions with a critical and forward-looking outlook.
  • Candidates interested in building cross-cutting skills relevant to public services, private sector, design/engineering firms, NGOs and associations.

The focus of the Master’s degree in Foundations and Practices of Sustainability is on so-called “strong” sustainability — the challenges of reducing and limiting energy and material flows so that economic activity is once again compatible with the biosphere and its processes.
