MSc Biogeosciences

The Master of Science (MSc) in Biogeosciences is the result of the integration of two fields of natural sciences: biology and geology. It reflects the emergence of new fields of research in the many areas of contact between these two disciplines. The aim is to train you in integrated natural sciences using modern techniques, providing the knowledge and tools needed to discover, understand and manage ever-changing natural environments across multiple spatial and temporal

Candidates must be holders of a Bachelor of Science in Geosciences and Environment, subject area Geology, awarded by the University of Lausanne or of a Bachelor of Science in Biology.
Another degree or academic title may be judged equivalent and give access to the master’s degree course, with or without further conditions.

Former students occupy a wide variety of roles, such as cantonal pedologist, scientist, scientific communicator, secondary school teacher and ecological consultant. Other examples are:

Understand and measure interactions between the geosphere and the biosphere, with a central focus on soil as both link and product of these systems. 
Build an interdisciplinary approach spanning chemistry, ecology, biology, geology and pedology, and learn to select the most appropriate methods. 
Set up and run your own project: choose methods, compare observations with the scientific literature, and develop a critical mindset

Students keen to work at the biology–geology interface with strong field and lab components.
Learners motivated by multidisciplinary, multiscale study of natural environments and by applying modern analytical techniques to real systems.
