On August 22, 2024, around 750 participants from business, politics and science gathered in the Kursaal Bern for the third edition of the Sustainable Switzerland Forum. Together, they discussed concrete ways to achieve a more sustainable Switzerland.

The morning allowed participants to delve deeper into three key topics. In the area of mobility & energy, Hendrik Lang, Senior Vice President Strategy at BMW, spoke about the crucial role of digitalization in the decarbonization of supply chains. This was followed by a lively discussion on nuclear power as a potential solution for the 2050 climate targets. Irene Aegerter from the Foundation for a Secure Electricity Supply, National Councillors Jürg Grossen (GLP) and Roger Nordmann (SP) and Councillor of States Thierry Burkart (FDP) highlighted the opportunities and risks of nuclear energy for the energy transition.

At the same time, extreme sportswoman and mountain guide Evelyne Binsack used her personal experiences to illustrate the extent to which the mountain world has already changed under the influence of climate change in the Alpine Habitat & Biodiversity thematic stream.

In the area of sustainable corporate management, Christine Antlanger-Winter, Country Director of Google Switzerland, provided valuable insights into the tech giant's sustainability strategy.

The highlights of the Sustainable Switzerland Forum 2024

The afternoon was dominated by a series of keynote speeches and panel discussions in the main hall. Werner Sobek, a pioneer in sustainable construction, spoke about responsibility towards future generations, while Antje von Dewitz showed practical ways in which companies can decouple their turnover from emissions.

A central discussion revolved around the question of whether the financing of climate protection projects should be seen as a solution or as a modern "indulgence trade". Antoinette Hunziker-Ebneter (Forma Futura), National Councillor Bastien Girod and Simon Michel (Ypsomed) discussed the moral and practical aspects of these approaches.

The program was rounded off with an inspiring keynote speech by James Cameron. The well-known social entrepreneur and consultant called for a rethink of the value of prosperity in the context of sustainability.

A total of around 40 national and international speakers took part in the forum. "The Sustainable Switzerland Forum 2024 has once again shown how important the exchange between stakeholders from business, science and politics is for the sustainable development of Switzerland," summed up Corine Blesi, Managing Director of NZZ Connect and organizer of the conference. "With the diverse discussions and practical insights, we were able to provide the participants with impetus for sustainability in their respective areas."

Exclusive CEO dinner

The forum kicked off the evening before with an exclusive CEO dinner in the Kursaal Bern, which brought together around 100 CEOs from the Swiss business world. The evening event featured speeches by Philipp Blom, historian and author, and Peter Altmaier, former German Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy. Blom criticized the unbridled pursuit of growth in a limited system, while Altmaier emphasized the importance of democratic solidarity in the face of current global challenges. "What we decide today", said Altmaier, "will have an impact for the next 20 years".
